What we learned about sales emails from Donald Miller

Back in January, Shay shared how our team would be learning from two educators this year, one of them is Donald Miller.

Donald Miller is the author of Storybrand and the creator of Business Made Simple University. He teaches all about simplifying your brand messaging and writing compelling copy that inspires action and drives sales.

Writing is something us small business owners and entrepreneurs have to do often so who better to learn from than a total pro!

In this post, we’re sharing our favorite nuggets and aha moments from the sales email module inside of Business Made Simple.

“DELIVER YOUR LEAD MAGNET VIA EMAIL”

We tend to want to give people access to their freebie right away and think that capturing their email is enough. In Marketing Made Simple we learned that we should always deliver our lead magnets via email because it starts warming up your lead to seeing your name pop up in their inbox. This also gives you the opportunity to deliver extra value and lay the groundwork for what they can expect from you next.

“BE OBSESSIVE ABOUT ASKING FOR THE SALE”

One of the things we love most about Donald Miller, is how his enthusiasm towards being bold & concise. When it comes to writing sales email, Donald believes you should start asking for the sale the second your target customer joins your list because this is when they are most primed to convert

“ALWAYS CLOSE YOUR EMAILS WITH A P.S.”

According to Donald, repetition is key and we couldn’t agree more. A P.S. is our modern-day TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read). It should get to the gist of your email in 1 sentence and include a limited time offer or call to action.

“PEOPLE WILL GO WHERE YOU TELL THEM TO GO”

Believe in yourself and your product and write with confidence. Stammering over your words, not using clear language and using too many commas makes people believe you less. Don’t let your insecurities come out in your copy & write with confidence. “People will go where you tell them to”. Genius!

“PROBLEM, PRODUCT, RESULT”

This is Donald Miller’s simple formula for positioning your product as the way out of your customer’s pain point. When writing sales copy, identify their problem, objection or pain point, position your product as the clearcut solution and paint the picture of how your customer will feel and what they will be able to accomplish as a result of your product or service. Boom.

“WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, BE ENTERTAINING”

This was one of our favorite tips and caught us by surprise! We love the perspective of having fun with your writing and letting your personality shine through. People love to be entertained and to read a great story so if you’re feeling stuck and don’t know how to get started, try this tip.

“EXECUTION IS WHAT MATTERS MOST”

No matter how many courses you take or how many strategies you learn, you won’t make a sale if you don’t take action on what you have learned. Get out of your own way and just go for it. Pen to paper, and write!

After this module in Marketing Made Simple, we took a ton of notes and walked away with practical tips we could implement immediately to our own funnels. Which was your favorite takeaway? Will you be checking out Donald Miller? Tell us in the comments.
